The Way (Dao)

By: Christine Chen

(I)

On a narrow path, the solid one wins.

On an extremely narrow path, the thinner one wins.

— A woman walks through life in the battle of weight watch

until, at last, her feet leave the ground and she ascends to the sky.

— Choosing the Immortal Path.

(II)

Being loved occasionally, she is flattered and overwhelmed.

Being loved constantly, she takes it for granted.

Not being loved, or having no one to love,

You neither grieves nor rejoices, neither resents nor desires, neither covets nor plays the fool.

— Choosing the Buddhist Path.

(III)

Between joy and heartbreak, between cliffs and abyss,

Between the darkness of night and the brightness of day,

Between a cup of fresh tea and a glass of strong liquor,

— You steer the boat to shore,

Safely living out an ordinary life.

— Choosing the Human Path.

(IV)

Because flowers are red,

Because dogs run, and dogs climb high up the beams,

You make yourself shine in dazzling purple, walking faster than the wind,

Leaving them far behind,

So they can only watch the dust rise, sighing in vain.

— Yet, in truth, you are on the same path.
