Obra Maestra - Today's Brilliant Contemporary and Modern Artist for Literature: Madame Rafia Bukhari

Madame Rafia Bukhari, a luminous poetess from Larkana, Sindh, Pakistan, is a beacon of hope for English literature in a region where such voices are few. Born on June 15 in a city steeped in history, she carries forward a legacy of storytelling that now bridges her local heritage and a global literary stage. As only the second English writer to emerge from Larkana after Fatima Bhutto, Rafia has carved her own path—a journey fueled by resilience, introspection, and an unwavering commitment to her craft.

Rafia’s life story unfolds like the pages of an engrossing book, each chapter echoing her inner world. Her poetic voice began to take shape early in life, finding solace and inspiration in the natural beauty that surrounded her. The setting sun, in particular, became a recurring muse, with its hues of gold and crimson symbolizing both endings and the promise of new beginnings. Her connection to nature became a mirror for her emotional landscape, where inner conflict often paved the way to self-discovery. These themes are woven deeply into her poetry, resonating with readers who see their own struggles and triumphs reflected in her words.

Her debut poetry collection, *The Painful Payment* (2021), introduced the world to a voice both tender and powerful. The book captured the intricacies of human emotion—love, loss, hope, and despair—through verses that spoke directly to the heart. Despite the limited English readership in her region, the book found an appreciative audience, testament to Rafia’s ability to transcend linguistic and cultural barriers. Her words, at once personal and universal, struck a chord, leaving an indelible mark.

Rafia’s second book, *A Flight of Broken Wings* (2023), further solidified her place as a rising star in English literature. This collection delves deeper into the human spirit’s capacity to heal and soar, even in the face of adversity. Readers have praised her poetic finesse, her ability to evoke vivid imagery, and the emotional depth that makes her work so relatable. Through her two books, Rafia has shown that English poetry can thrive in a landscape where it might initially seem out of place—a testament to her determination and talent.

But Rafia’s contributions to literature extend beyond her poetry. A gifted translator, she has painstakingly translated forty to fifty stories into English, opening a window for the world to appreciate the rich literary traditions of Pakistan. Some of these translations have already been published, with many more awaiting their turn to captivate audiences. Her work in translation is not just a labor of love but also a bridge connecting diverse cultures, preserving the essence of local narratives while making them accessible to a global readership.

Rafia’s academic pursuits are equally remarkable. Currently enrolled in an MPhil program in English at Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur, she is channeling her passion into a focused study of English translations of Shah Abdul Bhittai's *Risalo*. This project is both ambitious and profoundly meaningful, as it aims to bring the timeless wisdom of one of Sindh’s most revered poets to a broader audience. Her work in this area reflects her deep respect for her cultural roots and her commitment to fostering understanding through literature.

Despite her achievements, Rafia remains grounded and true to her mission. She is acutely aware of the challenges faced by English writers in her region, from limited resources to a smaller audience base. Yet, these challenges only fuel her resolve. She is not just a poet or a translator; she is a trailblazer, paving the way for future generations of writers to find their voices in a multilingual and multicultural world.

Rafia’s story is one of courage, creativity, and an unyielding belief in the transformative power of words. Her journey reminds us that literature knows no boundaries, that it can emerge from the most unexpected places to touch hearts and minds far and wide. As she continues to write, translate, and study, Rafia Bukhari is not just enriching the literary landscape of Pakistan but also contributing to a global conversation about identity, resilience, and the shared human experience.

Her name, much like the setting sun she so often writes about, shines brightly—a symbol of hope, beauty, and the endless possibilities of self-expression. With each poem, each story, and each step forward, Rafia is building a legacy that will inspire not just her contemporaries but generations to come.

"Unusual Task"

By: Rafia Bukhari

The doll lying face down weeps,

The desire that she keeps.

Being desired to accomplish we,

All those tasks that put us in trouble,

Because life is a sheer bubble.

At her very tender age,

She has passed a big stage.

The state of the soul is sad,

That was once caged.

Oh, doll lying face down!

It is better to be a clown.

We bid farewell to springs,

Greeting autumn brings,

All the withered leaves of the world,

Which were once rolled and whirled.
