"I was prompted to write this short story with an unusual title by the worldwide trend of spam calls. While repeating the famous problem of the "little man" in classical Russian literature, the narrative gives a slight irony, almost in the Chekhov style, forcing the reader to think about choice and responsibility abstractly from reality."- Alexander Kabishev Kinstantinovich
"Fear of a Call"
Author: Alexander Kabishev Kinstantinovich
There was a rather sharp call, beating on the ears and too positively irritable. The man who was sitting calmly at the table started nervously, jumping slightly on the spot. But when he looked around and saw that the source of this sound was his mobile phone, he quickly and awkwardly grabbed it and shouted into the phone with fear:
- Hello?
But the phone answered in silence.
- Hello, who is this? the man repeated.
A moment later, a voice rang out:
- Hello, this is…
Frightened, the man switched off, and meanwhile the voice in the void continued:
- ... this is the supermarket "You" we are happy to announce that you have won a scooter. Hello? Are you here? Hello? - the answer was beeps.
Several hours passed. Now the man was ravenously eating his lunch in the office dining room when the bell rang again. As if scalded, he snatched out the phone, the number was not identified, but still the person decided and answered:
- Yes?
- And good afternoon! Greetings to you…
The man hung up.
- ...the country's leading telephone lottery "New Game". Our congratulations! You have won a million! Are you still here? - the presenter turned to the disconnected person.
The answer was silence, the sound of the audience laughing in the hall was heard.
- Well, it looks like we'll have to look for another millionaire, - the presenter joked to calm everyone down.
Less than an hour has passed. The man was sitting at his desk, bent in the pose of a slave, over the computer screen and diligently quickly pressed the keyboard buttons. The phone rang again. The man froze and turned his gaze to the small, brightly flickering mobile screen. Now for a long time he did not dare to pick it up and answer, but finally, succumbing to the melody, he grabbed the phone, and, without uttering a word, brought it to his ear.
- Congratulations! According to the results of the census of the population " WHO " you are the one hundred millionth resident of the country! a cheerful female voice announced.
The man was silent.
- Is it convenient for you to talk now? A voice addressed him.
The man was silent.
- Hello?
He was about to answer something, when suddenly a rough and mechanical beeping came from the speakers. The man disconnected the phone and put it on the table next to him.
It was already the end of the day. Many colleagues went home, there were only a few employees left in the office. The man was tired, he felt boredom and suffering, he had no strength, his head ached terribly.
For the last few minutes, he had been helplessly and stupidly looking at the mobile phone lying on the table. But now he came to life. No, not a person, but a phone. He could not sing his melody loudly because of the new settings, but only hummed pitifully and quietly and crawled, vibrating, on the table. The man was sitting motionless and still looking at the phone. This lasted for several minutes.
But then the phone went silent and froze. The man was still silent and did not move.
